If it bleeds

In January 2021, the Conrads, the Andersons' next-door neighbors, received a small padded envelope addressed to Detective Ralph Anderson and his family on a long vacation in the Bahamas, printed in large letters, "NOT OPEN AND KEEP ARRIVE." When Ralph opened an envelope, he found a flash drive with "If it bleeds" written on it, presumably referring to the old metaphor on the news "If it bleeds, it will lead to the perpetrator."

The drive contained some sort of report, or oral diary, from Holly Gibney, with whom the detective collaborated on a case that began in Oklahoma and ended in a Texas cave. It was a case that forever changed Ralph Anderson's view of reality. The last words in Holly's audio report are from a blog dated December 19, 2020, in which she appears to be panting.

I did my best, Ralph, but that might not be enough. Despite all my precautions, there's a chance I won't get out of this alive. If I die, and you decide to continue what I started, please be careful. You have a wife and a son.
