This book is the fruit of a personal experience lived by Dostoevsky, as he talks about what he himself suffered in prison, although he attributes the memoirs to a man named Alexander Goryanchkov. He describes the feelings of losing freedom, and living with murderers and thieves who harbor great hostility towards him because he belongs to the class of masters who oppress the people. But Dostoevsky does not sink into pessimistic feelings, but rather, with time, he begins to distinguish between the bad and the good, and finds among the prisoners those whose crimes can be understood and even excused from the point of view of morality. It provides us with a powerful picture of prison life, with its misery, high human relations, exchange of benefits, trade... and things that one would hardly imagine. Dostoevsky criticizes the prison system, saying, "We must admit the truth: these men possess wonderful treasures.... Perhaps among our people they are among the most talented and the richest, but their excellent faculties have perished forever. Who is to blame?. As usual, Dostoevsky descends To the deep depths of the human soul, and to probe the nature in its depths that the mind does not control and cannot comprehend.It studies the psychology of the prisoner in his cruelty and in his willingness to give what he has in response to a gesture of human sympathy and affection.He also studies the psychology of the executioner who, if he is the best of people, his heart hardens under the influence of habit.
