Although Dostoevsky dictated the novel to a secretary and finished it in less than a month, it came alive and received a reception that surpassed most of Dostoevsky's previously published works. Especially since it contains something from what he lived and experienced for himself.

In this novel, we see the tears of the hero, Alexei Ivanovich, who is captivated by two untamed loves, the first of which is his intense love for the cruel and eccentric Pauline, and the second, the overwhelming passion of the roulette table.

His love for Pauline is a mixture of a desire to surrender and a desire to escape. It is both love and hate. He confesses to Pauline that he finds his slavery to have great pleasures. He tells her that in humiliation and falling it is a great pleasure, and the moment she accepts his love and exchanges his feelings for him, he flees. Dostoevsky portrays it as a kind of fascination, magic, delirium, and even a kind of defiance of fate.

However, Dostoevsky's hero, ends up seeing that this stubbornness so corrupted him that he finally abandons it.

The translation provided by Dr. Sami Al-Droubi of this wonderful novel gives us the ability to enjoy this great work, and it was an incomparable translation.
