Born a crime

When my mother threw me out of a car as she drove, I was nine years old. It happened one day. I know it's a Sunday because we were coming home from church, and because every Sunday in my childhood meant church, because we always went to church on Sundays. My mother was-and still is-a very religious woman, a very religious Christian. Like all indigenous peoples around the world, black South Africans adopted the religion of their colonizers. And by "adopted", I mean that they forced us to convert to this religion. The white man was very firm with the aborigines, and he said to them, "You must pray to Jesus Christ, because Christ will save you." And the aborigines replied, "Well, we need someone to save us—save us from you—but this is on my side, so let's give that thing about Christ a try." Trevor Noah
